After a long search WMH has recently filled its apprentice vacancies. At the beginning of September Charlie Hickman and Ian Barriball joined the company as apprentice welder fabricators who will over the next four years be working towards their NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications in welding and fabricating.
Charlie and Ian both join WMH straight from the local Callington Community College having both achieved passes in a range of GCSE and BTEC qualifications. They prefer the hands-on approach to learning that the apprenticeship scheme offers and found out about the vacancies from City College in Plymouth.
The apprentices will spend four days a week in our factory working on live projects with one day a week at college. During their time at WMH they will be mentored by our experienced welder fabricators in six-week blocks. Bill Tuft who has been mentoring Ian said “he is keen to learn, reliable and gets on with the job”. When asked about his experience, so far Ian said that he really enjoyed the welding part of the job but was apprehensive of the time he would have to spend at college.
Both Ian and Charlie have been put through their paces with a simple fabrication test, to manufacture a motor cover, the standard of work from both was very high and Charlie’s cover was fitted to a conveyor which has been installed on one of our customer’s sites.
Al Neri who has been overseeing Charlie’s work for his first six-week stint is very positive about the experience and said, “they bring a lot of youthful energy to the place”.
“It was surprisingly hard to find apprentices with this level of potential. We set out to find one Apprentice but upon finding both Ian and Charlie we decided to take them both on. I am really pleased to see the effort the tradesmen are putting into the lads and how quickly they are learning, I hope this continues and I can see these two being an important part of the company’s future.” Said Paul Messenger, WMH Operations Manager.
