For those of us over a certain age 1976 is memorable for the summer heatwave that saw the UK record it’s hottest average temperature since records began and became the driest, sunniest and warmest year of the 20th Century. During those balmy days Western Mechanical Handling was in it’s infancy as John and Janneke Tomlinson moved with their young family to Cornwall to set up a mechanical handling company in a small rented workshop in Tavistock. Little did the Tomlinson’s know that 40 years later their company would have grown to be a highly successful design and build company supplying major blue chip food and pharmaceutical companies with bespoke, innovative production automation and control systems.
From small beginnings building trolleys, racks and tables the company now employs over 30 highly skilled designers, engineers and sales personnel and produce large turnkey solutions for complex food and pharmaceutical handling operations. The company now operates from purpose built premises on the edge of Callington only a few miles from the original workshop.
John Tomlinson remains at the heart of the business, driving the company to continue to succeed and to put a structure in place that will allow him to begin to step back and enable his sons Tom and Jan to begin to pick up the reigns to drive the company on for the next generation.
During 2016 to celebrate the longevity of the company WMH will be holding a factory open day to showcase some of the more innovative products WMH can now offer. WMH will also be hosting a Golf day at St Mellion where clients will be able to compete in several individual and team competitions.
