After almost five years WMH is quietly celebrating the success of its drive to recruit the engineers of the future, as the first two apprentices come to the end of their training.
During this time WMH has been actively recruiting and training apprentices to address the issue of an aging workforce.
As with many long-established engineering companies WMH recognised that in order to prevent a skills shortage in the future, active investment would be needed in the next generation of engineers. Since 2016 WMH has employed seven engineering apprentices across the business to ensure the continuation of the specialist skills required for the design and manufacture of high-quality food production machinery.
All WMH apprentices follow a structured path of BTEC and NVQ qualifications in general engineering. Attending college in Plymouth one day a week and practical skills development under close supervision from WMH’s experienced engineers for the remainder of the week. WMH apprentices are now spread across the business specialising in welding, fabrication and fitting, machining, and electrical panel building and controls.
“We are very proud of the progress our apprentices are making and the valuable contribution they are able to make to the business now and in the future.” Said Tom Tomlinson MD.
A full profile of our current crop of apprentices can be found in the article Apprentice Profiles 2021
