May’s calendar photograph was taken at one of Cornwall’s most famous landmarks, St Michael’s Mount, though this view is looking away from the mount back to the mainland and shows two traditional Cornish pilot gigs moored in the harbour.
Cornish Pilot gigs are six-oared rowing boats, built of Cornish narrow leaf elm. The original purpose of the Cornish pilot gig was as a general work boat and for taking pilots out to boats coming into harbour off the open sea. They are recognised as the first land-based lifeboats. Today gigs are mainly used for sport and gig rowing is popular around Cornwall and further afield.
The photograph of St Michael’s mount harbour was taken by WMH Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator Helen Northcott.
